The Indian Ocean is the world's third-largest ocean basin and a critical corridor for energy, commodity, and container trade connecting East Asia with Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Ports like Yangon in Myanmar serve as waypoints in supply chains that span the full breadth of this ocean, from the Strait of Malacca in the east to the Suez Canal and the Cape of Good Hope in the west. The maritime risk profile of the Indian Ocean varies dramatically by sub-region, making route-level risk assessment essential rather than relying on broad regional characterizations.

The western Indian Ocean — particularly the waters off Somalia, the Gulf of Aden, and the Mozambique Channel — has been historically affected by piracy. Cyclone activity in the Indian Ocean presents a significant seasonal risk, particularly in the Bay of Bengal (April-May and October-December) and the Arabian Sea (May-June and October-November). These systems can produce sustained winds above 100 knots and cause catastrophic damage to vessels and port infrastructure.
