The Indian Ocean is the world's third-largest ocean basin and a critical corridor for energy, commodity, and container trade connecting East Asia with Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Ports like Thilawa in Myanmar serve as waypoints in supply chains that span the full breadth of this ocean, from the Strait of Malacca in the east to the Suez Canal and the Cape of Good Hope in the west. The maritime risk profile of the Indian Ocean varies dramatically by sub-region, making route-level risk assessment essential rather than relying on broad regional characterizations.
